1 Kings 17:1

A prophet named Elijah, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to King Ahab, “In the name of the LORD, the living God of Israel, whom I serve, I tell you that there will be no dew or rain for the next two or three years until I say so.”

Three years later…

1 Kings 18:20-21

So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal to meet at Mount Carmel. Elijah went up to the people and said, “How much longer will it take you to make up your minds? If the LORD is God, worship him; but if Baal is God, worship him!” But the people didn’t say a word.

Quiz it

After King Solomon, Israel got in a real mess. The tribes divided and fought against each other. They worshipped false gods like Baal. So God sent messengers (prophets) to call them back.

  • What is the most important message or news you have ever received?
  • What was the message that the prophet Elijah brought to King Ahab and Queen Jezebel?
  • Why did this make them really angry? (I Kings 17:1)

[Guide discussion towards thinking about how this challenged their worship of Baal, who was thought to be the god of the rains and harvest.]

Elijah re-appeared three years later and calls the people to a showdown on Mount Carmel.

  • What happened next?
  • How did this prove that Elijah’s God was the only true God?

Elijah was God’s messenger calling people to follow God with all of their hearts. See 1 Kings 18:21.

  • If Elijah was a prophet today what would he challenge us not to trust in?

God gave Elijah some tough jobs to do. Even Elijah got scared and ran away.

  • In what ways did God take care of Elijah’s hunger and then his fears?

God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper. Before we pray take 30 seconds to be silent and see if God whispers to you.

Pray it

Dear God,

We believe you are the true and living God. Sorry for trusting in other things. Thank you that you care for me, especially when times are tough. Help me to hear your whisper and follow you with all my heart.

Amen

Pray it + Find a quiet space and take some time to listen to God’s whisper.
